Bikepacking in ZAMBIA VIDEO: Chipata, South Luangwa, Lusaka, Zambezi

We are Gaspard and Javi, two “cycling pirates” that now and then get 3 months off from work to cycle the world in an autonomous, adventurous style. This series of videos give a taste of our 2023 adventure crossing Africa from East to West.

This video shows our cycling adventure across Zambia, spanning 1’071 kilometers through diverse and stunning landscapes.

Our journey kicked off in Chipata and took us to South Luangwa National Park, we were immersed in incredible wildlife encounters, experiencing the thrill of our first elephant sightings.

A notable highlight was our passage through the old Petauke route. This path, once an important artery for trade and travel, provided a contrast to the more modern roads we had traversed. The route was rugged and challenging, filled with wildlife ranging from small birds to large elephant herds. There were also some lions around that luckily we didn’t meet.

As it always pays off to suffer, we were honored to be invited by a local king to show and participate in a traditional dance, a highlight of our trip that gave us a unique glimpse into Zambian culture. The king also invited us to eat buffalo at his “castle”.

In Lusaka, we enjoyed a vibrant city atmosphere, hosted by the best family we could ask for (Merci Simon and Aya) and conitnued our route to the Zimbabwean border by Lake Kariba and River Zambezi.

This expedition tested our endurance with its demanding terrains and remote stretches, but it also gifted us with unforgettable wildlife experiences and cultural insights. The vast, open roads and the rich, diverse environments we encountered made this journey truly extraordinary.
