Bikepacking in ZIMBABWE VIDEO: Lake Kariba, Zambezi, Victoria Falls

We are Gaspard and Javi, two “cycling pirates” that now and then get 3 months off from work to cycle the world in an autonomous, adventurous style. This series of videos give a taste of our 2023 adventure crossing Africa from East to West.

This video captures our cycling journey through Zimbabwe, covering 500 kilometers through some of the most remote and challenging areas we’ve encountered.

We began in Chirundu, making our way to Siavonga before heading towards Musango in Lake Kariba, where we stayed for two nights in an amazing lodge which had a lot of cancellations due to the political situation. After this small paradise, the route took us through isolated landscapes, with water scarcity being a constant challenge: even the boreholes were mostly empty or contaminated by coal, sulfur or similar.

Along the way, we explored local fishing villages, where we gained insight into the daily lives of the communities living along the Kariba Lake. We continued through Siabuva, and Siamwinde, with each stop providing a deeper understanding of this remote region.

As we approached the end of our journey, we passed through Deka and finally reached Victoria Falls, where we explored the magnificent falls. This trip, with its harsh conditions and limited resources, tested our resilience but rewarded us with unforgettable experiences, breathtaking views and friendly and helpful locals.
